Guitar pull-offs: Are you supposed to try NOT to touch the string below with the finger you pull-off with?

It seems next to impossible to not do it, especially on my strat which has little clearance between strings. I want to be a session guitarist when I'm older though, so I want to be able to play pull-offs perfectly.
