What are the parts/materials needed to emble/build a bicycle good for speeds?

If you are building a bike on your own, be prepared to shell out at least $1K (US) for the parts, then whatever amount for the frame, then the wheels. I've provided a link for a site that sells a custom build kit, either a road bike or mountain bike.
