Is my boyfriend taking tramadol to get high?

He says the tramadol helps his depression and makes him feel happier and more motivated but this is not a depression med. I've been researching and some people say you can not get high from it and others say you can?? He is spending 140.00 dollars a week on this stuff with now over 90 pills a week! I do not understand this because it is not even a narcotic so why in the world is he so obsessed with this pill and acts as though he can not functin through life with out it?
